The classic space game gets a makeover

X-Wing Alliance Upgrade is a game utility that brings a new look to the 90's space simulation game, Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance. This free-to-download mod gives the 21-year old game an incredible makeover, from updating the ship models to touching up everything. It even has support for virtual reality (VR).

The basic gameplay of the original title remains intact. What X-Wing Alliance Upgrade brings to the table is stellar visuals. Note that remounting the scene in a modern look requires you to patch the game with multiple files—42 of them. Of course, you will also need the original game.

What can you expect from this app?

Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance is the fourth and last entry in the X-Wing computer game series. Released in 1993, it is considered the sequel to Star Wars: TIE Fighter. It featured hardware-accelerated 3D graphics with higher resolution textures. Additionally, rather than the flat 2D drawings of its predecessors, it rendered cockpit graphics in 3D. However, given the era of its release, everything looks outdated compared to the games today.

X-Wing Alliance Upgrade is a mod that gives the original title a higher level of detail. It does not only upgrade the 3D models but also added beautiful galaxies as a backdrop. There are also fully dynamic and interactive cockpits and even VR support. Moreover, it has a new holographic message system that tracks your missions. Of course, it now runs in widescreen on modern computers and higher resolution.

As noted, X-Wing Alliance Upgrade retains the basic gameplay of the original X-Wing Alliance. Additionally, it requires you to patch the game with all of the 42 files. There is a 2GB Mega Patch that bundled all files together.  With this, you can save time in patching every graphical update. Also, since this is a mod, you need a copy of the original game, which comes with a paid license.

Should you download it?

Star Wars: X-Wing was great over 20 years ago, but X-Wing Alliance Upgrade brought it forward to fit the modern-day. With this updated mod, the game is looking better than ever. Not only that, but players can also enjoy more advanced features, such as VR support and interactive cockpits. Best of all, this mod is free, so you only need to pay for the original game.
